What changes when the logic lives in one place

Multiplatform app development is not about halving your team. It is about two native apps finally agreeing with each other, and a shared codebase that keeps them that way.

Stop the two apps drifting apart

When your pricing rules live in two codebases, they diverge. Support finds out before you do. One shared module means Android and iOS reach the same answer on every release.

Keep the native interface users expect

Nothing about the app feels ported. iOS keeps SwiftUI, Android keeps Jetpack Compose, and neither audience gets the uncanny sense that this was designed for somebody else's phone.

Start with one module, not the whole app

Share a login flow or a pricing engine and leave everything else alone. If it pays, extend it. Very few architecture decisions let you buy a small piece first and judge it on evidence.

Reuse what you have already built

If your Android app is written in Kotlin, most of the logic exists. Multiplatform lets the iOS app inherit it rather than reimplement it from a specification document and hope the two match.

Cut the QA surface, not just the code

One tested rule serves both apps. Your regression suite covers the shared module once, instead of chasing the same defect through two platforms twice a release, forever.

Keep a way out

If it stops paying, the shared module gets rewritten in Swift and both apps carry on. Google reached the same conclusion about their own KMP work. A bounded downside is rare in framework decisions.

Readiness assessment

We look at your codebase, your team's Kotlin and C# depth, and your release cadence. If the answer is stay native, you hear it in week two rather than month six.

Framework decision

We choose between Kotlin Multiplatform, .NET MAUI and staying native based on the stack you already run, not the one we would enjoy. You get the reasoning in writing. 

Pilot module

We pick one self-contained piece, usually authentication or a calculation engine, and share it. Small enough to reverse, real enough to settle the argument.

Shared architecture

We draw the line between shared logic and native interface, then build the shared layer with a clean API on each side. That line is the entire design decision.

Native interface build

We build or keep SwiftUI on iOS and Jetpack Compose on Android, wiring each to the shared module. Both apps stay recognisably themselves.

Release and expansion

We ship to both stores, then widen the shared layer module by module as the returns justify it. You expand on evidence rather than on faith.

Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter and React Native share the interface as well as the logic, so one codebase draws both apps. Multiplatform shares the business logic and lets each platform draw its own native interface in SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose. If one codebase for everything is what you want, our cross-platform app development services cover that instead.

They will read it more than write it. Kotlin functions are called from Swift like any other API, so your iOS team works in Swift against a shared module. It is still a real change to how they work, and it is the first thing the readiness assessment tests rather than the last.

Kotlin Multiplatform if you already have an Android app in Kotlin and want native interfaces on both sides. .NET MAUI if your organisation runs on C#, Visual Studio and Azure, and you need Windows or macOS too. The answer is usually whichever ecosystem your engineers are already fluent in, not whichever is newer.

Yes. JetBrains puts the number of companies using it above 20,000, and McDonald's, Sony, Google and Careem all run it in production. It is younger than Flutter, and iOS debugging tooling still lags. Both of those things are true at once, and you should hear both before deciding.

It runs, but it cannot keep up. Microsoft stopped shipping updates on 1 May 2024, so the app will eventually fail new store requirements. Xamarin.Forms has a semi-direct upgrade path to .NET MAUI. Xamarin.Native usually needs rebuilding, and if you are rebuilding anyway, MAUI deserves comparing against Kotlin Multiplatform rather than being assumed into.

When the app is mostly interface and barely any logic. A content feed or a brochure app has nothing worth sharing, so the setup cost buys you little. Also when you need one platform only, where our Android or iOS work fits better, or when the app is so interface-heavy that a cross-platform framework would serve you better.
